Presbyopia
is the loss of near vision that comes with
age. The lens in the eye loses its ability
to focus. It happens in people who wear
glasses or contact lenses, as well as people
with normal eyes. It usually occurs to people
in their 40’s and 50’s.
Reading
glasses or bifocals are needed to correct presbyopia
and improve near vision. However, it is possible
to avoid them in a majority of people with Monovision
LASIK or the Crystalens.
The
Crystalens focuses like the human lens. It is
implanted, usually in both eyes, and creates
seamless focusing from distance to near and
everything in between. Go to the Crystalens
page to learn more about this exciting new method
of correction
When
using Monovision
LASIK to correct presbyopia, the
dominant eye is corrected for distance vision
and the other eye for near vision. The visual
system automatically selects the better image,
allowing sharp vision in most settings.
Approximately,
75 % of people accept monovision without
difficulty. 15% do not like it and 10% have
some initial difficulty, but adapt to it.
If you are in your forties or older, we
will demonstrate monovision correction during
your consultation. You may then make an
informed decision as to whether monovision
is an appropriate treatment for your presbyopia.
