What Is a Cataract?

A cataract forms in the lens of your eye when the proteins in your lens begin to break down and interfere with the passage of light. For you to see clearly, the lens must focus light precisely to form a clear image on your retina. A cataract scatters light entering your eye, preventing sharp vision and clear images. In cataract surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

Cataracts may be brought about by:

  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Long-term exposure to sunlight without sunglasses
  • Smoking
  • Diet lacking vitamins and minerals

If you have a cataract, your vision may be cloudy or fuzzy. Cataracts grow, so you may not notice any cataract symptoms at first but your vision will progressively deteriorate.

Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cataracts

As your Eye MD, Dr. Wilmarth will help you achieve your best eye health and vision. If you are looking for ways to protect your vision, he can help you prevent cataracts. If you think you may have cataracts, he can diagnose the condition and treat it.

Once a cataract has progressed, it can’t be reversed. Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens. Dr. Wilmarth has extensive experience in this procedure and can help you choose an intraocular lens that meets your expectations.

Sometimes, a cataract is the result of another medical condition or an inherited genetic trait. But in some cases, there are ways to prevent cataracts and protect your vision. You can prevent cataracts by:

  • Scheduling regular eye exams
  • Wearing sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays
  • Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals
  • Not smoking or drinking excessively

Regular eye exams are an important way to prevent not only cataracts, but other eye conditions as well.
