What Can LASIK Do?

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery where the shape of the cornea is revised with a state-of-the-art laser to enhance visual focus. The procedure is very safe, and Dr. Wilmarth has extensive experience providing laser vision correction with state-of-the-art technology.

Patients with the following types of vision problems might be candidates for LASIK:

  • Astigmatism
  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)

LASIK can also be used to correct the effects of presbyopia. The monovision LASIK procedure corrects one eye for near vision and the other eye for seeing far away, reducing the need to alternate between reading glasses and regular correction with age.

Is LASIK Right for Me?

Most healthy adults with these eyesight issues can safely get LASIK. However, only a professional evaluation with Dr. Wilmarth can answer this question definitively.

During your free consultation, Dr. Wilmarth will examine your eyes and review your medical history. You might be a LASIK candidate if:

  • Your vision prescription has been stable for a year or more
  • You have no serious eye diseases
  • You don’t have dry eye syndrome
  • Your corneas are of average thickness (or thicker than average)
  • Your cornea tissue isn’t scarred

Not meeting one or more of these criteria won’t necessarily disqualify you from laser eye surgery. After a comprehensive exam, Dr. Wilmarth can discuss potential issues and recommend LASIK alternatives as needed.

What If I Can’t Get LASIK?

Before the creation of LASIK, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) was the most frequently performed method of laser vision correction. The procedure is still performed today, usually for patients whose corneas are too thin or otherwise unsuitable for LASIK.

However, many of our patients in the Folsom area enjoy permanent vision correction with Visian ICL. Instead of altering the shape of the cornea with a laser, Dr. Wilmarth places a thin implantable Collamer lens into the chamber of the eye. Though similar in shape to a contact lens, the Visian ICL is designed to stay in your eye and enhance your vision permanently.

The exact LASIK alternative or variation that Dr. Wilmarth might recommend will depend on the findings at your initial consultation. Dr. Wilmarth will take all of the time you need to review your options and determine which vision enhancement is best for you.
