ReSTOR is a state-of-the-art intraocular lens (IOL) used to replace your eye’s natural lens when it is removed during cataract surgery. While traditional IOLs are monofocal and only allow you to achieve clear vision at one distance (near, mid-range, or far), ReSTOR is part of a class of premium IOLs which achieve clear vision at multiple distances. As a result, many cataract surgery patients who choose the ReSTOR IOL no longer need glasses after their procedure.
The best way to find out if the ReSTOR IOL is right for you is to schedule a free consultation at our Sacramento ophthalmology office. Call 916-782-2111 today. Experienced cataract surgeon Stephen Wilmarth, MD, will conduct a thorough evaluation of your eyes and review your options with you in great detail.
How ReSTOR Works
ReSTOR is one of several multifocal IOLs that have been approved by the FDA for use with cataract surgery. It is considered a multifocal IOL due to its ability to help you see clearly at multiple distances.
In order for your eye to focus clearly on objects at different distances, your natural lens changes its shape. This allows the light to focus properly on your retina. The ReSTOR IOL is able to accomplish this same goal by using multiple focus zones on the retina that are able to focus light from varying distances at the same time. Your brain then chooses the clearest image of the object.
ReSTOR’s design utilizes diffraction and apodization technologies in order to help you achieve clear vision at a variety of distances. Diffraction technology splits incoming light into two separate focal points on your retina, enabling you to see clearly when viewing both near and far objects. Apodization technology facilitates a smooth transition of light between near and distance focal points in order to achieve a broader range of quality vision. As a result, you are able to focus clearly on intermediate distances as well. Many of our ReSTOR patients are able to eliminate the need for glasses or contacts entirely thanks to this revolutionary technology.
